Keron

If I were a doctor, helping these children would be my side business, because we have so many special needs, but we don’t have doctors who know them. […] The doctors are not aware.

— Edith, Keron’s mother

Field Notes: The research results show that many parents are confronted by the limits of the Ugandan health care system. Edith is one of them. In Uganda there are hardly any facilities to provide children with special needs with the care they deserve. Edith’s child, Keron, has Down Syndrome. Edith helps other parents identify their children’s disabilities in her neighborhood. When she can’t answer the parents’ questions, she refers them to the NGO Angel’s Centre – illustrating further the importance of briding social capital.
