Vanessa
& Valencia

The father of my kids doesn’t support his children at all. Actually, he has ignored them, he no longer minds. He doesn’t want to mind about them.

Field notes

Sylvia’s household context illustrates the research finding that stigma can also be present within the household itself. Furthermore, it shows that briding social capital , like help from a local NGO, is crucial in supporting caretakers in the upbringing of their children. The Angel’s Centre, one of the only day care centres for children with disabilities in Uganda, plays a very important role in Sylvia’s life. It gives her access to accurate information and to resources such as food and medication, as well as the physical and mental support a caretaker needs.
